Tirso Moreno, Secretary*

Farmworker Association of Florida

Apopka, FL

Yes, we know you know him as a farmworker leader, which he truly is.  But this picture, taken in Quebec, Canada a few years back at a regional meeting of La Via Campesina, also shows his deep connection to the land and farming in Monterrey, Mexico.  In fact, many, if not most,  farmworkers are also farmers or ranchers and from farmworker families.

Chilo Villarreal, Assistant Treasurer*

Mexico City, Mexico

Mily Trevino-Sauceda, Assistant Secretary*

Alianza Nacional de Campesinas, Oxnard, CA

Here is Mily, as she has done all her life, organizing people, especially women, to gather for collective action against injustice. Always with laughter, but also deep and abiding fortitude and commitment.

Darnella Burkett Winston, Youth Representative*

Mississippi Association of Cooperatives

Petal, MS

Here’s Darnella out picking okra in the “Earn Your Day” Competition hosted by the workers of the Farmworker Association of Florida for our 2008 Rural Coalition Assembly in Homestead.  Darnella won the contest hands-down, after lots of practice at her home cooperative, Indian Springs Farmers Cooperative, in Petal, MS.  Ask Darnella about cooperatives.  She will convince you to join one, especially if you are a farmer or rancher.  She is a 5th generation farmer, and yes, Ben is her dad.  And our newest member, Denver, is her daughter.
