All Workers in All Workplaces Should be Free of Harassment: Expand Title IV of the Civil Rights Act to Include Farmworker Women

Posted on May 1, 2018 by Rural Co Admin

This May Day, in support of justice for the workers of the world, Rural Coalition calls on all our members and allies to support the call to action by our member organization – Alianza Nacional de Campesinas – to expand Title VII of the Civil Rights Act to include protections to domestic and farmworker women.

Recognizing the inherent intersectionality of worker justice, Alianza Nacional de Campesinas is fighting for the right of women farmworkers and domestic workers to secure decision-making roles and a healthy workplace free of exploitation in all forms. Despite progress by farmworkers secured in solidarity toward better working conditions and pay, the unique needs of farmworker women remain unmet. Alianza Nacional de Campesinas works to increase public awareness and education about workplace violations in farm work across the country, the health risks from pesticide use for farmworker women, and the rampant sexual exploitation and assault of farmworker women in the agricultural fields of our nation.

In November of 2017, Alianza Nacional de Campesinas wrote a letter of solidarity to the Hollywood women involved in bringing the sexual abuse of Harvey Weinstein to light. Published in Time, the letter, written on behalf of 700,000 farmworker women-brought their experiences as farmworkers into the public conversation on sexual abuse. Together with Hollywood actors who responded at the Golden Globes, the work done by Alianza Nacional de Campesinas was cited as a primary factor in launching the #TimesUp movement in the January 1st New York Times article.

Today, Alianza Nacional de Campesinas has joined with the National Domestic Workers Alliance in carrying that momentum – seeking real policy reform in Washington, and addressing the structural flaws that allow for such high rates of sexual abuse to occur in domestic and farming environments.

Now it is our time to join forces and act in solidarity with the working women of the world. Please join us in taking a stand against the exploitation and sexual abuse of farmworker and domestic worker women. This May Day, support the incredible work being done by Alianza Nacional de Campesinas and The National Domestic Workers Alliance by sending a letter to your congressperson. Urge them to expand the protections granted other women in Title VII of the Civil Rights Act to include domestic workers and farmworker women. For more information and to send your letter, click here. To learn about our Rural Coalition member group, Alianza Nacional de Campesinas, visit their website.

Happy May Day 2018!
